What is daylight-inspired lighting?

Daylight-inspired lighting mimics the light of natural sunlight within your home. This is usually achieved through the use of bulbs with a colour temperature of 5000K-6500K during the day. Bulbs with this temperature offer a bright, white glow, producing a more realistic daylight impression because of the higher colour contrast.

With that being said, it is important to consider the time of day, location and room you are lighting when implementing daylight lighting into your home. Sometimes lighting above 4000K isn’t appropriate, for example on an evening when you should be minimising exposure to blue light, which can negatively impact sleep and mental health. Ideally, your lighting should mimic natural sunlight at each respective time of the day.

This means you should aim for a warm and yellow light in the morning and evening, neutral light at noon and ultimately transitioning down to 2700K. One of the best ways to do this is to use CCT (Correlated Colour Temperature) lighting to ensure you can adjust kelvins appropriately.

Benefits of daylight lighting in your home

Implementing daylight lighting into your home comes with many advantages. From mental and physical health benefits to improved productivity, we’re about to showcase several benefits for you to consider.

  • Improved mood and wellbeing – Mimicking natural sunlight, daylight lighting helps regulate circadian rhythms and boost serotonin levels, reducing stress and improving overall mood.
  • Enhanced productivity and focus – Daylight lighting can reduce eye strain and enhance concentration, making it the perfect option for focus areas, such as a home office or a reading nook.
  • Better sleep quality – If you struggle to sleep, exposure to daylight lighting could be a solution for you. This lighting helps to regulate your sleep-wake cycle and promotes better sleep at night.
  • Accurate colour representation – Daylight bulbs have a high Colour Rendering Index (CRI), which showcases colours more accurately. This makes them great for everyday tasks, such as makeup application, or big home decor decisions, such as paint colours.
  • Energy efficiency – Many daylight LED bulbs are energy efficient and can help to reduce electricity bills whilst providing bright and natural-looking lighting.
  • Healthier indoor environment – Daylight lighting reduces the reliance on artificial yellow-toned lighting, which can cause eye fatigue and disrupt natural body rhythms.

1. Living Room & Bedrooms

  • Recommended Bulb: LED daylight bulbs with a colour temperature of 2700-3000K
  • Use: Best for reading corners or rooms with limited natural light.
  • Tip: Anything brighter than this would produce a very bright light, which can be overly stimulating in home environments. Try to minimise blue light for a warm and inviting atmosphere.

If you want to create an open and airy feel to your kitchen interior, you can install pendant lights and include daylight bulbs over kitchen islands. Another alternative is to install under-cabinet LED lighting to reduce shadows on countertops. To ensure you have even illumination in your kitchen, you can brighten dark corners with recessed lighting.

4. Bathroom & Vanity Areas

  • Recommended Bulb: LED daylight bulbs with 4000K–4500K

How do I create a natural light feel in a windowless bathroom?

Bathrooms without natural lighting don’t have to feel dark and dingy. Install a backlit mirror to enhance brightness and mimic natural light. You can also use a combination of overhead and vanity lighting for a lighter feel. Opt for glossy or light-coloured tiles when decorating, as these will reflect artificial light effectively.

Case Study: How I Use Smart Lighting to Follow My Body’s Natural Rhythm – Jamie Moxey, Dusk Lighting

Don’t just take our word for it, Jamie Moxey, one of our lighting experts showcases how he uses smart lighting to work in harmony with his body’s natural circadian rhythms.

“Lighting plays a far bigger role in our daily lives than many people realise. It doesn’t just illuminate our homes—it affects our mood, energy levels, and even sleep quality. With smart lighting, I’ve tailored my home to work in harmony with my body’s natural circadian rhythm, adjusting colour temperatures throughout the day to enhance both comfort and functionality.”

Jamie Moxey, Dusk Lighting

Here is how Jamie uses smart lighting in his home

Our bodies are designed to respond to the natural cycle of the sun. In the morning and evening, warm, soft lighting (2200K–2700K) helps create a relaxed atmosphere, preparing us for restful sleep.

In contrast, during the daytime, particularly in darker rooms where artificial light is needed, cooler temperatures (4000K) provide a more energising effect, reducing fatigue and improving focus.

I’ve programmed my smart lighting system to automatically transition between these settings, ensuring that my home lighting always complements the time of day.

Bedroom & Hallways

In the bedroom, I use smart bedside lamps and under-bed lighting programmed to emit a warm 2200K glow in the evening. This creates a cosy, relaxing atmosphere, reducing exposure to stimulating blue light before bed. At night, a wireless PIR sensor under the bed detects movement, triggering a dimmed warm light to guide me without disrupting my sleep.

Similarly, my hallway lights remain dim and warm at night, providing just enough illumination for late-night trips without that harsh, wake-you-up effect.

Lounge & Evening Spaces

In the lounge, lighting follows the same principle—soft and warm in the evenings to promote relaxation. Smart lamps and ceiling fixtures adjust automatically, gradually dimming and shifting to a lower Kelvin setting as the evening progresses.

Daytime Functionality in Darker Rooms

In areas that need artificial light during the day, such as my home office or a north-facing room, I’ve programmed my smart lighting to shift to 4000K. This cooler white light enhances concentration and alertness, helping to create a more productive environment without making me feel drowsy. By switching automatically, the lighting adapts seamlessly without requiring any manual adjustments.
