Before choosing your pendant lights, there are several factors you need to consider to ensure you find the best possible fit for your interior.

Your first consideration should be the placement of your pendant lights and how they align with your interior. Pendant lights are commonly hung above islands and tables in rooms such as the kitchen and dining room. Deciding on the placement of your pendant lights will help to determine other factors, such as the size and style of the pendants you require.

Size and style

Choosing a pendant light that complements your interior is crucial; otherwise, your decor may look cluttered if you install a pendant light with a conflicting style. The amount of space you have can help you decide on the size of your pendant lighting.

For large areas, you may want one large light or multiple light fixtures; the choice is yours. The size of your pendant lighting will determine the number of pendants you can install.

Light purpose

Knowing how you will use your pendant light is essential for deciding on size, style and placement. Are you looking for task lighting, ambient lighting or lighting in general? Different purposes require different illumination levels, which can dictate your choice of pendant light and may affect the height at which you hang your pendants.

Ceiling height

The most important consideration when hanging pendant lighting is the height of your ceiling. When hanging your lights, you should avoid causing obstructions and provide adequate lighting to large areas of your room.

If you have low ceilings, the drop height of your pendant will be restricted to allow plenty of headroom, whereas high ceilings allow you to install pendants with extensive drop heights.

What height should I hang my pendant lights?

Dining room

The general rule for lighting above a dining room table is a clearance area of approximately 30 inches from the bottom of the pendant to the tabletop. If preferred and depending on the pendant’s style, hanging the pendant slightly lower can help to create a cosy atmosphere.

If multiple pendants are required, leaving an equal gap of about two feet between each lighting fixture is recommended. Leaving a gap of about 15 cm from the pendant’s side to the table edge can help to create a consistent interior. You must leave enough space between the table and the pendant to avoid causing obstructions for people sitting at the table.

Kitchen

Kitchen island pendants should be hung about 30 inches above the tabletop, similar to your dining room. Additionally, you should have a gap of approximately 72 inches from the base of the pendant to the floor.

If you are installing multiple pendant lights, you must ensure they are proportionally spaced apart, with a gap of approximately two feet between each light. This gap may be shorter depending on the size and number of pendant lights you intend to hang.

Bathroom

Bathroom pendant lights are becoming increasingly popular and are often hung close to the wall, reducing the risk of you bumping into them. Contemplate hanging your bathroom pendants at eye level or around 30-40 above the vanity to get the best results. If you opt for eye level, you should hang your pendant so that the middle of the shade meets your eye line.

When installing bathroom lighting, ensure you are aware of bathroom zoning. Bathroom zones are areas of your bathroom where equipment must have a certain amount of protection against water. The zones are:

• Zone 0 – Zone 0 is considered to be inside the bath or shower itself. Any light fitting in Zone 0 must be immersion-proof with at least an IP67 rating.
• Zone 1 – This is the area above the shower tray or bath to a height of 2.25m from the floor. Any fittings in this zone must have at least an IP65 rating.
• Zone 2 – Zone 2 is an area that stretches 0.6m from the perimeter of the bath or shower and 2.25m from the floor. A minimum rating of IP44 is required for any fittings used in this zone.

Hallway

Installing pendant lighting in your hallway is a great way of giving guests a fantastic first impression and setting the tone of your interior. Hallway pendant lighting should be high enough to avoid colliding with out-swinging doors and obstructing head height.

You should leave at least seven feet (215 cm) of space between the floor and the bottom of the pendant. For every extra foot of ceiling above eight feet, you should add about 6-7 cm to the space left between the floor and the pendant. To avoid further collisions, you should try to leave approximately four feet of space between the pendant fixture and surrounding obstacles.

Living room

If you’re adding a pendant light to your living room, choose the room’s centre to create a stunning focal point. Sticking with a clearance of approximately seven feet is a good starting point; however, nothing stops you from hanging it lower for a cosy ambience.

Bedroom

Pendant lighting in the bedroom is a great alternative to table lamps, providing extra space. It is recommended that you leave about a foot of space between your bedside table and pendant; however, there is flexibility for you to hang them higher if you prefer. If you plan on hanging a pendant above your bed, leave enough room so you don’t bang your head.

Office space

Office pendant lighting is a great alternative to desk lamps, as they save you space for working and are a great way to add task lighting. A general rule to follow is to hang your pendant light approximately three feet above your desk, leaving you enough room to stand up and avoid hitting your head.
